DELAWARE
"Where were you on 9/11?" as remembered by those in Delaware that day.
A Delaware resident remembers a robber at her elementary school on the morning of September 11th.
1. "I was in second grade, attending school in the middle of a city. Someone robbed a nearby store that morning and ran onto my school's campus to evade the police. Another teacher came into my classroom and told my teacher to lock the doors and windows and shut the blinds. I knew from this that something was very wrong and I was scared, but none of us knew why we had to go into lock down at the time.
Eventually the robber was caught and we had an early dismissal from school.

My mom picked me up and we watched the news together. She explained what had happened. I had never heard of the World Trade Center but I understood that many people could be dead.
My mom was crying, so I knew it was horrifying.
I was only seven years old in September 2001 and I had a safe and loving childhood, so up until that point I had really only seen evil in the form of Disney villains. 9/11 impacted me because it was my first (albeit peripheral) encounter with real evil and sheer terror, and things were different after that day."

2. "I was working as a nurse at St. Jones Center that day. The phones started to ring while we were in report that morning, when we answered several of us were told simultaneously of the first tower being struck, After hanging up the phone we turned on the TV and saw the second tower get hit.
Because St. Jones Center (now Dover Behavioral Health) is located right next to Dover Air Force Base there was normally plane noise and planes flying frequently, but after air space shut down it was eerily quiet.
Later that afternoon I was taking my break outside when I heard and then saw two Chinook helicopters flying across that beautiful sky toward NYC.
I’ll never forget it. Being from a military family I felt a mixture of grief and pride."

3. "Seven month pregnant laying in bed with my husband, I was horrified watching it on TV. He woke up and asked what movie I was watching. All I could say was "It's not a movie."
Sitting outside later near the Dover Air Force Base, I was amazed at how quiet the sky was. We went to visit my mother-in-law who was crying hysterically, she was a former NSA employee who had close friends in the Pentagon. I attribute that event to my postpartum depression.
All I could think is how could I bring my child into this world."
