Memories from Malta
1. "I was at the band club in Marsa, having a beer when suddenly news of the first plane crashing appeared on all the stations. I remember people were happy, saying that the Americans deserved it and that they had it coming - hopefully this would be the beginning of the end for the US. Others were worried that this would lead to World War III because the US would retaliate violently with nuclear weapons. At some point, I remember someone handed me a free beer to celebrate.
I remember some old guy with a massive belly telling everyone how badly the Americans treated him when he was a migrant worker in the US during the 60s, and that they treated him worse than an animal. As far as he was concerned, the US deserved it, especially after the Gulf War.
I remember staying there for quite some time, then when the second plane hit, there was a mixture of exclamations: 'allostja', 'illalla mann', and some cheering.
I remember it being really dark when I left, and someone bid me farewell and told me,
'F'ghoxx l-Amerka' (Fuck America).
I was quite drunk and I remember it took me ages to get home.
My mother was watching the news in the evening, saying how tragic it was and my father was claiming it was Saddam."
