Memories from Moldova
1. I was 7 years-old, and had just started elementary school and only recently moved into our new family house. I remember that my grandma was visiting, and the TV was temporarily in my room while something was being fixed in the living room. My school usually had an extended day til 6 p.m. but I was brought home at around 4-5 p.m. from school by my dad which was weird since he always had work until 5 p.m. I was annoyed that I couldn't watch my afternoon cartoons since my grandma and dad were hogging the TV to watch what I though was a stupid American thriller film. When my mum got home from work, my parents finally explained to me that it was live news everyone was watching on TV, not a film. It was happening in real time in New York and Washington in the US.
I don't remember a lot of details of the rest of my first month of elementary school, just a general sense of tragedy. I think my parents might have tried to explain what terrorism was afterwards, in a as non-traumatising way as possible, but I can't really be sure. All I know is that I knew it was bad even as a 7 year old on another continent with no direct connection to the country or the city affected. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been to be anywhere near NY or Washington D.C. that day.
