Memories from Spain
1. "I was spending a few days with my extended family in the village where my dad was born. We turned on Galician TV to see news about stolen sheep, run-over cows, tractor accidents and property limits disputes, then... What was that!"

2. "I was 4 years-old, with my siblings and Mom in the big supermarket. The market had a buffet type lunch and a place to leave kids where a PS1 brought me to spend a lot on gaming in the future.
We were eating at said buffet, and suddenly my mom turned pale. I didn't figure out much but because of what came after I still remember it.
It is likely one of my first memories. Kinda tragic if you ask me."

3. "It was my sweet summer of 16. I had just came out of boarding school, and we had recently moved to a major southern city from our native town in Northern Spain.
I remember my uncle going into panic mode and thinking WWIII was inevitable now. He rushed us into the Hypermarket to provision ourselves.
Oh the naughties , my my how time has passed. A whole new generation has grown into adulthood from that day.

4. "I was 7, coming home from school to have lunch with my family. We always had a "tradition" of watching the news on the same channel. As we were finishing lunch, the news said they were making the broadcast a bit longer as a news helicopter or plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers.
They connected live with a news reporter team who were saying that it was a small plane and the anchorman was really confused (but calm) saying that the hole was too big for a small plane.
A few seconds later, another plane hit.
The rest of my memories are mainly seeing the anchorman really worried as I have never seen him before. As per my family tradition, I had seen this anchor all my life. My parents, they just stood there, in front on the TV, they didn't even sit or finish cleaning up the lunch. My dad was quiet and my mom really nervous. I don't think I was old enough to understand why it was so important but I knew it had to be. They didn't move for at least an hour.

Matías Prats remembers September 11, 2001.

5. "I don't remember if I had returned from school or if it hadn't started yet, but I was watching The Simpsons on Antena 3 while I ate. They cut to the news with Matías Prats saying that a small plane had flown into one of the towers. They were saying that it was weird but likely some sort of accident. While they were showing the images of the first tower, there was an explosion on a corner of the screen and when they showed another angle both towers had a hole. The correspondent said a second plane had just crashed into the other tower! My mom said,
'Do the Americans have something like ETA (a former terrorist-separatist organization in Spain)? Because that looks like a terrorist attack to me.'" - Reddit user /u/MinervaJB |
6. "I had just gotten home from work at a sleepy military air base in southern Spain, my sister-in-law called and said to turn on the TV. I remember being in shock and almost not believing what I was seeing. Going to work the next day, just knowing to make preparations for one of the biggest military airlift operations in recent memory."

7. "I was 11 and had first day of school the very next day. You know how the last day of summer vacation feels, it is like an ultimate Sunday, so I wasn't in a good mood. I had spent the night at my aunt's house playing Command and Conquer with my cousins, but I had to go to my house to have lunch and prepare for school.
The TV was on and a building I didn't know about was on fire. Matías Prats was saying it was a tragic accident. My mother was very worried but I didn't care that much, it was just an accident far away from home.
All of a sudden, the second plane came in, and then we all got shocked. I couldn't believe that kind of stuff could happen, like, in front of my eyes. You watch a lot of tragic things in the news, but you never see these things happening live on TV. It felt like it was a movie, unreal. I remember very well the people jumping from the towers, that traumatized me. Then the towers falling... Too much.
The next day at school was so weird, normally first day of school is fun, you see your friends after all the summer, you get to know your new classmates, teachers read out loud lists of students and people laugh of each others surnames... But that day was so sad. People didn't know what to do or what to say, there were kids crying, kids nervously laughing, the teachers all confused... Terrible."
